A VPN (Virtual Private Network), provides access to shared network resources across separate networks. Any good VPN is inherently secure, even over insecure or public outside networks. Is sounds like it could be complicated, and it often is; thanks to Hamachi, it doesn't have to be.
You can read deep into the technicalities and inner workings of VPN if you want, but what you really need to know is that you should use a VPN solution if you want simple remote access to your home or work network. Firewalls and routers block outside connections to your network resources, such as other computers and devices. A VPN securely addresses this issue by making your remote computer act as if it is physically present on the network.
Hamachi is really simple to setup. You'll create a virtual network one time, then join all your devices to that network using a secure key. Hamachi installs a virtual Ethernet adapter on your computer, and uses this to communicate with your virtual network. After signing in, there's really nothing left to do - Hamachi's zero-configuration standard means you shouldn't need to adjust your router or firewall settings at all.
NOTE: Hamachi is only free for non-commercial use. For a similar program that is free for personal or commercial use, check out the "Competition" tab below.
