While MCEBuddy is for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 Media Centers, this article will focus on Windows 7 Media Center. Not only is Windows 7's Media Center waaaay better than its predecessors, there have been working alternatives to MCEBuddy on the others for some time. MCEBuddy finally makes it possible to process recorded TV in the same way on Windows 7.
With Windows 7, Microsoft introduced the native WTV format for recorded TV, dumping the old DVR-MS format. You can still convert WTV to DVR-MS - manually or automatically - and from there work with the files mostly like Vista MCE, but until MCEBuddy came to the rescue, there was no easy way to cut commercials or convert the WTV files to other video formats.
After a one-time simple configuration (the author even has a brief PDF installation guide for the timid and non-technical), MCEBuddy will run in the background on a schedule that you define and process your recorded TV as you choose, commmercials or no commercials, H264 or a phone-friendly preset.
