Digging through countless lines of code is extremely tedious and tiresome, especially if you're using a simple notepad or text-editor. Fortunately, talented developers have saved us (and themselves) from this annoyance by creating top notch intelligent code editors like Notepad++.
Automatic highlighting and syntax recognition is any code editor's basic MO. Notepad++ does this solidly, and then adds a whole bunch of other features for advanced functionality. For example, Notepad++ is able to record macros for quicker action-based editing.
Most impressive is the program's extensible architecture, which allows for the development and addition of plugins (not unlike Firefox) and "TextFX" to enhance Notepad++'s capabilities. Notepad++ exists in two flavors - ANSI and Unicode, the default - and not all plugins will work with both, but currently there are around 35 plugins available, most of which are contributions from other developers. Unfortunately there is very little proper documentation for these plugins, but Notepad++ Plugins does have its own SourceForge site - browse around there if you need help.
NOTE: The new icon (actually optional as of v5.5.1, not the default) from Blue Bison was just released with version 5.5 (based on Scintilla v2.01). Still a max resolution of 48x48, but feel free to use our PNG or ICO file for a higher-res (128x128) icon.
